Slice of Life Day 5: I Am...Attending a Conference

This is Day 5 of the 31 day Slice of Life Challenge sponsored by Two Writing Teachers. I am participating in this community for the first time this year. So far, I am loving the daily habit of writing, and the feedback from other writers!

I am a teacher, attending a two-day conference.
I wonder why I don't have any Lularoe leggings; everyone else does.
I hear Girls Just Wanna Have Fun drifting in from the exhibit hall.
I see Powerpoints. Lots of Powerpoints.
I want to learn something new.
I am a teacher attending a conference.

I pretend to listen as I check Twitter and Facebook (teachers are so like students sometimes).
I feel irritated. Did you not practice this presentation?
I touch the page of my writing notebook as I am invited to write and participate.
I worry that my session won't have anyone attending.
I cry when I see that lunch is still 2 sessions away.
I am a teacher attending a conference.

I understand that I must be a lifelong learner.
I say show me something I can take to my classroom tomorrow.
I dream that professional development will be differentiated.
I try to choose my sessions wisely, and sometimes I do.
I hope I will get some new ideas.

  1. I have been in your shoes. Conferences can be incredibly inspiring; full of ideas and new strategies you can take back to your classroom OR they can be awful.

Hope you were able to find some great ideas you can use!

  2. Yes! I don't know the conference that you are attending, but I think I was just there with you. My colleagues and I promise that we will present next year with a session that we would want to go to! Bless you for giving your time in this way. I hope you could come home with something.

  3. I've been to this conference (doesn't really matter which one) If speakers aren't grabbing your attention, it's tough to stay focused. Hope you find something of value...

  4. Love the repeating line, and you perfectly capture the struggle that can sometimes be a conference. I try to be very selective in the ones I go to so I can be sure to learn, but even at the best ones, it's sometimes hard to choose the right sessions.

  5. Attending a conference can be an inspiring or mind-numbing experience. I hope your experience was a great one. I think we attend conferences in search of like-minded people who share our love of learning and our quest for improving what we do with children. I like the way you crafted this piece with the recurring line. Brilliant!

  6. Cristy,

    What was your presentation about?

I enjoy reading your poem. Yes, we - teachers- are just like out students. Getting fidgety during long lectures, wishing for hands-on sessions and checking our text / FB / Twitter status.
