Slice of Life Day 9: A Melody Can Bring Back a Memory

For today's Slice,  I put my I-Pod on shuffle and wrote about the first give songs that came up. I'm writing this on my phone as we are driving to the beach, so I apologize if there are typos.

1. Something I Can Never Have by Nine Inch Nails. When I was in high school, my best friend and I listened to Nine Inch Nails constantly after the Downward Spiral came out. The most vivid memory I have of this song is being in the back of the Blazer at Lookout Dam watching the stars and listening to this song. I still love this song. Trent Reznor’s voice is beautiful.

2. Country Road by James Taylor. It seems to me that James Taylor and John Denver are always at war in my head, and Taylor (undeservingly) always comes out on the bottom. I like Country Road, but not as much as Country RoadS (Take Me Home). James Taylor reminds me of my mom. She loves him, especially Fire and Rain. This is a windows-down on a sunny afternoon in the country kind of song.

3. Corduroy by Pearl Jam. My friend bought Vitalogy when we were juniors in high school, and I swear it didn’t leave my cassette player for three months straight. This song and Yellow Ledbetter were our favorites. It takes me straight back to long summer days at the lake.

4. Can’t Stay the Same by Saves the Day. I was introduced to Saves the Day by a friend of mine at school. This whole album (Under the Boards) is like a musical version of The Bell Jar. It’s a rainy day listen.

5. Got the World on a String by Frank Sinatra. I’m almost embarrassed to admit how much I love Frank Sinatra. I will listen to Sinatra and Tony Bennett when there’s no one else around. And this song is one of my favorites. It just really makes me smile. And it's awesome to sing at the top of your lungs and embarass your middle school kid.

  1. James Taylor is one of my favorites. We saw him in concert a couple of years ago and he jumped right up the list. And how can you have a muic list without Frank? I love these choices.

  2. Music is a great way to trigger memories. For me, ‘Mickey’ by Toni Basil was the first (of many, many) records I bought. Now, hearing Brad Paisley’s ‘Mud on the Tires’ brings me right back to when my daughter was 3 and knew every word and wasn’t afraid to sing it loud and proud. Great slice and great walk down memory lane. Thank you!

  3. A great format that helps reach back for memories that surface so easily with a song or two. Music helps us recall places, people, and feelings. Nice post!
